Hi:

Last Tuesday, my 6 year old began to complain that her stomach hurt. She was moaning and crying...this lasted through the next day, Wednesday. She saw the doctor on Wednesday who indicated this was some virus. I did not receive notice from the doctor that he thought this was appendix related.

On Thursday, she seemed to be getting better, asking for food. (She has not thrown up anything by the way)...But on Friday, toward the end of the day, she felt bad again. Of course, I in error, gave her a very very small bowl of pasta and sauce since she said she was really hungry.

Today, Saturday, she is moaning again. I am only giving her water, Gatorade and popsicles, and maybe later, maybe a little white rice if she says she is hungry. Also, some crackers...once in a while.

Does this sound like stomach flu? She has had no fever...or throwing up. Just nausea. I called the nurse who indicated these things last 3 days...but, today is day 4....

Appreciate your comments. If she is not better by next Tuesday, I think I will take her back into the doctor...I wonder what he would do, X-ray her stomach?

Thnaks...

Did the doctor do a blood test, because her white count should be high if it is appendicitis. Is her pain on the right side? Has she had a low grade fever?

Sometimes all the classic symptoms adults experience are not always there in children with appendicitis, so it is hard to say what's going on.

When was the last time she pooped?

If she is able to eat again, stick to the BRAT diet.

Considering she has had this for five days, if it were my child and she was still moaning and crying with pain, I would not wait until Tuesday, I'd take her to Urgent Care today.

Poor little kid.

In a situation like this, I'd be haunting the doctor's office on this or hit the ER. It shouldn't be going on so many days.

I'm praying for her.

Honestly, it would depend on the child and the severity of the moaning and groaning. Only you know your child.

If it were her appendix, she would be running a fever, and as it progresses, people feel extreme nausea.

Without knowing more than what you said (such as bowel movements), it doesn't sound like something I would run to the ER for. However, only you know her, and sometimes it's better to know than to constanly worry.

It sounds like she is constipated. Unless she is throwing up and/or has diahhrea, I would not give her the BRAT diet. That will only bind her up more. They can have a stomach virus w/ no vomitting, and extreme pain to the stomach. I had that once and just curled up on the floor. I did have diahrea with it, though.

If you do take her to the ER, they will probably run a battery of tests, and sometimes that is very unpleasant to the child. Besides the blood work and urine work, they will run other tests. Unless you think she swallowed something, they won't do an x-ray. They might to an upper/lower GI, an ultrasound, and or and MRI.

This is not always true. As I said before, children do not always exhibit the classic symptoms of appendicitis.

If the tenderness is on the right side and you push on that spot and quickly let go, does she have pain? When the doctor examined her he should have done that and maybe she didn't have rebound pain and that is why he ruled out an appendicitis.

This could be so many things from constipation to a blockage or anything in between...abdominal pain that has gone on this long though, is not something I would mess around with.

I would take her back to the doctor to get it checked out. Is she under a lot of stress? Has anything in her eating habits changed in recent weeks?

Stomach pains are hard to diagnose in children...only a doctor can really figure out what is going on. In the meantime, I would journal her stomachaches...when they start, how bad the pain is (on scale of 1-10), what she's eating, etc. so when you go back to the doctor they can have some clues as to what may be causing the problem.

I woke up one morning and knew my appendix was "hot." I had practically no typical symptoms.

I've got some cool color photos of my insides... including bagging up an appendix about to burst. It was tucked down funny.

Sometimes symptoms aren't typical. I'm not saying this to scare you but keep you alert and paying close attention to your kid. Bug the doctor some more.

I am praying.

She could have gluten sensitivity, in which case stay away from pasta and grains for a couple days. Doctors rarely diagnose gluten allergies. What other foods has she been eating, other than pasta and crackers (both have gluten)?

Thinking of your little one this morning and wondering how she is. Praying her stomach issues have resolved.

Indeterminate stomach pain in young children can also be a stress indicator. Had she recently overnighted at a friends?

Journaling the symptoms is a great idea, I do that also. Sometimes you do notice a pattern, such as an hour after she eats lunch or ...?

In fact by recording my grown daughters recurrent illness we noticed a pattern which in turn helped the Dr.

So difficult when your little one is ill.
