Almost done - then I have to move on to uniforms. Thanks for the hint about the Staples backpacks. That was a blessing. I got one for my middel child - who never has anything new. I just need the odds and ends - like index cards (I bought the wrong size the first time, but that's okay - they were 1 cent.) I still need to buy a box of tissues for each child though - that's all I send in at the beginning.

Garsy, so you remember how much the dry erase markers were at Wal-Mart? I looked at Target today but didn't they they were a great deal. I'd like to just get a bigger package and break it up and send 2 here, and 3 there, as needed. If someone knows of a good deal on those that'd be great! If I go hopefully I'll remember to look at the zipper binders; my son wanted one that zipped, along with some other features. He may have to make do with his from last year though. Target had one style of 1" binders for 75 cents. I still need some zip lock bags for my first grader also. Dee

I had to buy two packages to take care of everyones needs. Sticky notes!! That's another thing! BUY the off brand! Post-it brand was $5.44 for a stack of 5 post-it note pads. The store brand from walmart was $4.97 for 10 pads!! I didn't NEED to get that many for this year, but I figure I'll use them next year too! Blessings, Garsy

I just spent $65 on school supplies at Walmart yesterday during my lunch hour. Crayons 25 cents, pencils 50 cents a pack, spiral bound notebooks 15 cents, markers $1.00. I bought a big tub and just about filled it.

Old Navy and Osh Kosh were having sales on uniforms. In fact you can get a great deal at Osh Kosh this weekend with an additional 20% off the entire store. That is on top of their normal 20% off coupons that are out and about.

Target seems to have the best prices on calculators. We found ds's there last evening and it was only $88 for a TI84 plus. They have the new TI84silver for only $11 more, but, I don't know if the teachers want him to have that many applications available. So, the book bag and calculator are done...now on to the clothes.

Here it's based on the classes taken for high school and fixed fees for middle and elementary. I won't see Ty's bill til after school starts and I'll pay half then and half second semester. The other three? well I just don't know. I KNOW My 4th graders fees will be about $125 and that's just the beginning. Hopefully we can get some assistance again this year. Paying for one wouldn't be bad, but when your paying for 4 it can get REALLY expensive really fast! Blessings, Garsy

I noticed that a friend on facebook posted that she didn't have to buy any school supplies, that the public school provided them. So tonight at work I asked a former teacher, and she said that the kids didn't have to bring anything in. There are no class fees, no registration fees, no sports fees, etc ......They do have to pay for field trips. No wonder people are losing their homes left and right due to high property taxes!

I am a teacher, and I am surprised that the list of supplies is so specific as to mention brand and even color! Also, you should never be made to bring supplies for other children. I don't see how they can force you to do that. I often have parents that do send extras and specify that they sent stuff for children who couldn't bring any. And, midyear, I have sometimes sent letters home asking for donations; but nobody HAS to comply! The parents who want to, do. This year, with tight budgets, our school is asking local churches, stores, etc, to donate some materials. We'll see how it works out!

Just goes to show you the differences from one part of the country to another. Even one district to another. A lot of it I assume has to do with how much taxes people pay and how much money the school district has to provide those needed items. Here in Indiana we do enjoy relatively lower taxes, but our school districts are hurting because of it. My 4th graders list was shorter than it was a couple years ago when I had a previous 4th grader. The middle school lists haven't changed very much over the years either. I do credit our teachers with finding ways to keep the lists shorter. As much as I'm in the classroom tho I do realize how hard it is to teach when kids don't have the needed supplies. Blessings, Garsy

I think the school taxes are taken out in property taxes, and since we rent, we don't pay that. But with the budget crisis in California, parents are left footing the bill for a lot of academic type things. For instance, they request that if our child is out for the day (for whatever reason), to give $37 to the school because they don't get paid that day for that student. Because it costs less to teach 36 students as opposed to 37 students??? Don't completely understand it other than the state is cheap. At any rate, the $130 to the high school is yearbook, student activities card (get into dances and athletic events), class t-shirt, and some other minor things. We also have to buy PE clothes (This is what makes me so angry ... why can't the kids wear generic workout clothes that are cheaper!?!?!: They get graded down if they aren't wearing the same PE clothes as everyone else with the school name and such.....and when step-son loses his every other week we pay a fortune for those). Step-daughter is in marching band so we have $200 band boosters, plus $120 for winter guard, plus $800 for her trip to San Diego. Plus who knows what else.

We were required to dress out for PE, but it was specific colors (not specific brands). My school colors were maroon and gold, so we had to wear a gold short and maroon shorts. If we weren't dressed out in those items, our PE grade was docked. DS has a fairly small list of school supplies, but his list is suggested (not required from what I can tell). He isn't attending a brick and mortar school this year though.

I was required to dress out, but it could be any workout type clothes. Shorts and a t-shirt is what I wore.

I have actually thought about buying now to stock up, but I was very good and all I bought were some crayons. D will use them sooner than later. Well, when he stops eating everything anyhow.
