Yesterday and today my internet service keeps going in and out. When it goes out we have to unplug the modem and plug it back in for it to work. It has been very hot here so I'm wondering if its an overheating issue?

To see if that is the issue, put your hand on the modem when it goes out. If it is significantly hotter than normal, this is quite possibly the problem. I found that putting my routers/modems on a small basket on the ground took out about 95% of this problem (when I was thinking the same thing you are now). It allowed much better air flow and minimized over-heating.

What model modem are you running? Sometimes the problem like yours can be a poor design of the modem itself. I use a Motorola Surfboard SB5101 and for the past year and a half it's worked like a charm. However, even the best designed modem can still lack function if you are dealing with overheating. Try to make sure your modem is properly cooled with a/c or maybe running a small house fan over it. See if that helps.

> When it goes out we have to unplug the modem and plug it back in for it to work. That tells me there's a wiring problem between the box on the pole and your modem. Especially if you've got a long run from the pole to your house. Either a wet connection or a loose connection or a connector that wasn't properly crimped on the cable. I'd give the service provider a call. They may (or may not) ask you to connect your PC directly to the modem (bypassing the router/firewall) and ask you to retrieve some signal statistics for them.

Sorry haven't gotten back here sooner, was in NH working. Found out it was the modem, got a new one and all is well. Apparently you have to replace them every three to five years or so.Thanks for your help.

Ah, good its resolved. Yes, both DSL and cable modems will wear out over time as various parts start to degrade. When I read or hear problems like this and a quick fix is power cycling the modem, a lot of times the problem is in the line or the modem. When you power cycle a modem that is degraded or any modem on a line that has degraded, it will reset itself, acquire its signal, and possibly perform well for a short time. But as the modem adjusts to power and noise levels on the line, which happens through normal operation, you eventually get back to the same broken state you started in.

Our latest connection problems at home were not a problem with the DSL modem. It was the ancient cable from the street to the house. They had to come out to the house and lay down about 80 feet of new cable from the stand to the house, and they had to trench it the whole way. The guy who looked at the hookup said he had not seen a connection like that since the 70's. When you read things like "Europe/Japan is ahead of the US in broadband Internet", it is primarily (if not fully) for the reason of our ancient infrastructure. The US built out a vast continental wired telephone system decades before others. And it still works for carrying voice. No one wants to pay for upgrading it. Other countries came along later and rolled out more modern systems as their first major infrastructure. That is the issue.

Part of the problem in the city where I live is we only have 1 broadband/internet/cable tv company. They have a contract with the city so none of the other companies can come in. So when if you get fed up with cruddy service (which happens a lot) you don't have a choice to change.

No, they claim they don't have lines in this part of my city. Basically all other companies have to get permission from the city to come in, and because C****** has the monopoly, they (other co's) charge ridiculous amount for it.

Dang. That stinks. I would periodically check my phone provider every now and then anyway. Who knows when they may put in some new equipment. Essentially all you need is to be within 18,000 feet (of copper wire) to a DSLAM (or other aggregator). Most telcos have a page where you can put in your zip code and they can do a quick check on the web page. Who is the cable provider for curiosity sake?

Thanks everyone for your posts. I've been having to sometimes reset my Verizon modem several times in evenings. I've only had service at new address for few months. I will contact them about possible wiring issues.

When you call into Verizon for support issues, they will run through a number of things, including checking things from their end. They may ask you to do a reset for them, wait, then they check it again. They don't like to roll a truck out as that costs money. So they will do everything they can to solve it over the phone, over the wire directly, or even convince you to wait some more. I will say that several times I was sure it was a line problem and they "fixed it" remotely, usually by just changing our noise profile and upping our bandwidth to compensate for loss. But there are some problems that are simply a result of copper gone bad.

Thank you, I'll mentioned it to them when I call them today.
