It wasn't about the COST of the book. . .it was about the mark up, from a CHRISTIAN company.
Not that I'm defending them, but they are a business that has to show a profit, so there is always going to be markup. That doesn't justify charging more than the published price, but your comment makes it sound like you don't expect a Christian business to make a profit. And that's just plain ridiculous.

Any Christian business is entitled to show a profit, provided it can do so legally. But the point of GraceyGirl's post is that a bookstore, whether Christian or not, is legally or contractually obligated not to mark a book up to more than the price marked above the bar code. The retail price marked, in this case $14.99, should be sufficient to cover expenses and allow a profit.

If FCB can't make a profit at $14.99 when every other bookstore can, then they appear to have a serious stewardship problem, and that would also be a good reason not to shop there.

I've paid full price for books but I've never been charged over the suggested retail price. I didn't think that a store would try to get away with that.

I am going to have to change my vote to Borders. B&N is reevaluating which books they are carrying in store. The only computer books they are carrying in store now are the beginner books.

Plus B&N does not work with the Sony Reader I just bought.

I thought this stuff was going to happen with the focus on ebooks.

Look up the program Calibre. One of the other threads lead me to it, and I have loved it since I got it. It allows me to change the format of alot of books, and put them onto the kindle I have.

It doesn't do every type of ebook format, but it does do SOMETHING that every ebook reader can read.

I downloaded Calibre but I don't know how to use it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but both b&n and borders are selling epub books with encryption..

However the reader can't open b&N books.. because the encryption on the reader doesn't support it. I can however open the books on the laptop and the Ipod touch (Yes I have that too).

So while calibre can change formats.. I don't think it was meant to break amazon's encryption or Adobe's encryption.

BTW I was wrong in my previous statement. Doesn't look like Borders is carrying the reference books either I wanted. So I will have to order the real book (which comes with a cd with the ebook) or just download the electronic version.

So that's the future of book reading.. we will just be sitting in the coffee shop with our kindles/nooks/readers.

I realize what her point was, I'm not that dense.

Sorry, but I've had a couple of arguments here recently with people who hadn't previously shown evidence of being that dense, but who had trouble understanding perfectly plain English when the message didn't suit them. I thought this was another.

Amazon and CBD....

I do not care for Barnes and Noble or Borders..their Christian section is extremely small, and, all books are full price...not much incentive to go their...

Did all my shopping at Valley Book and Bible in Van Nuys, CA. Along came Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc., and patronage dropped off tremendously at Valley B & B. Sadly, they had to close last December, after about 40 years in business.

I agree with your point about profit. Too many people these days act like profit is a bad thing. Christian companies have just as much right to make a profit as anyone else.

I DO care whether a company, christian or otherwise, is breaking their agreements with the publishers when they sell their products. That is an issue of integrity.

Charity shops...

The amount of times I've been to Waterstones or WHSmiths and bought a £9.99 book only then to go to a charity shop a few mins down the road to find the same book for 70p is one time too many! Not to mention it goes to charity which is a plus of course!

If I'm to name a store though, I find myself in Waterstones more than any other. They always seem to have what I'm after.

I don't have a problem in the world with anyone making a profit on their merchandise, and after re-reading my post, I don't think what I said could have been construed that way unless someone were particularly looking for that type of comment.

That said. . .

It is against rules, set down by publishers and distributors, agreeded up in contract with booksellers, to violate sales policies. I except ESPECIALLY that a Christian oriented merchandiser would follow these rules. . .more so than anyone else.

In all that we do, we are to glorify God. That means, if you've contracted and have agreed to do things a certain way, then especially b/c we are men and women of God, we should do them that way. Period.

I buy a LOT of books from another well known Christian bookstore. . .I have no problem supporting their business. They have always conducted themselves with integrity. But being a good steward of what is entrusted to me, means that I do business with other good stewards. And breaking the rules, to make a larger profit (for whatever reason) is NOT an indication of godliness or good stewardships.
