I am a teacher and I don't really understand this. And I doubt that this will result in more planning time for teachers, as administrators will probably fill the time with meetings. We tried a once a month all day planning thing at our school where they went to resource/enrichment type classes all day and the classroom teachers had planning. Our principal just scheduled a bunch of meetings, so it didn't help.

I also am a teacher. A half day is difficult, even for those of us who want to make good use of the instructional time. The kids come to school on those days with the mindset that they won't have to do any school work, so it is extremely hard to motivate them. And, yes, there are always some teachers that just pop in a video--which ultimately is a poor reflection on the administration for allowing that to happen.
In these days of budget cuts and financial difficulties, it would be more cost effective to have one entire day off a month instead of two half days simply because of the cost of running the buses. The expenses of running the buses for a half day are the same as for a whole day. Cut out one day a month, and the savings significantly add up over the course of the school year. Of course, that depends on the school county or district. Our county is in the country and the students are really spread out, with a lot of buses and many miles put on them every school day. Our superintendent has done away completely with half days. We either get an entire day off or no days at all off!
Depending on where you live, AprilShowers12, maybe you and a group of other parents could use the financial side of this as an argument to get things changed. I hope you realize how much influence parents can have. You can make a difference and get things changed for the better. But it does take numbers of parents, not just a few.

We have been doing this in our local district for over 13 years. We used to do just one hour and now it's 2 hours 10 mins. MWRF are longer days to compensate for the time. Then teachers get training and stuff or planning on Wednesday afternoons.

Aren't teachers usually salaried and not paid hourly??
I agree about half days being a complete waste of time.

With our kids school...we have many single-parent families....and a fair amount of both parents working full-time jobs. Thankfully, our school district is mindful of this, and keeps 1/2 days, and "days off" to an absolute minimum....
While my wife is a "full-time" stay at home mom, she can empathize with the working parents, as we live in an area that has a VERY VERY wide diversity of people from many socio-economic backgrounds.
A schedule like this would be a real challenge for those who must work during the day. (and, that is not taking the view that school is a "baby sitting service")....it's just reality AND necessity for many families.

A couple neighboring districts just went to something like this as well. One district has scheduled late starts one Wednesday and then let out early one Friday a month. The other district has on their schedule to start 30 minutes late every Wednesday. I don't know how this is going to affect a couple of our teachers at our elementary as they have kids in the second district.

or tell the kids to bring a book to read. The good/great teachers just do a shorter lesson like they are supposed to do but even they acknowledge that this is hard.
